An official confirmation will be given to all participants.

Some lectures and workshops will be on English. During the activities on Polish you will be free to see very interesting places in Cracow and nearby (for example the university building Copernicus studied in).

The bungalows are not specially comfortable (although with shower and small kitchen) but there are good hotels in Niepolomice and you are free to book a room at your own expense.

14th EAAE-IAU astronomical school held in Varna

The 14th EAAE-IAU astronomical school for teachers was held in Varna during September 1st-5th. More than 40 bulgarian teachers participated in the school.

A group picture during the Summer School.

The greatest interest was displayed towards the lecture “Training to teach astronomy”: a cooperative opportunity for EAAE and IAU , and towards Prof. Rosa Ros’s workshop New experiments on gravitational lenses.

Teachers were split into two groups: first group - teaching astronomy to 5-7th graders, second group – teaching astronomy to 10-12th graders.

During the school, teachers attended the following general lectures:
1.“ Training to teach Astronomy: a cooperative opportunity for EAAE and IAU – by Prof. Rosa Ros.
2. SMARTNET – results and perspectives – by Prof.  Diana Kyurkchieva
3. „NAOP-Varna’s capabilities for teaching astronomy”– by Svezhina Dimitrova.

Lecture by Rosa Maria Ros.

Each group did practical exercises and received instruction, according to to the age of their students and topics from the curriculum. During the exercises, teachers from the first group modeled spatial maps of the constellations and the Solar System. They eagerly used Internet astronomical educational resources and methodological ideas for their application to solve different astronomical problems as part of the practical exercise. There were shown a large number of interesting computer presentations on gravity, phases of the Moon, space flight, sizes and distances in the Universe, light and shadows, life in the Universe, and optical phenomena in the atmosphere. Teachers learned how to make virtual astronomical observations in the classroom. They developed ideas for lessons based on Computer planetarium. Teachers enjoyed the lesson about actual and virtual observations of stars, stellar systems, stellar clusters and the Milky Way, which was held in the Planetarium.

Teachers working in a workshop.

The good weather allowed observations of solar prominences with an H-alpha filter, and during the night – a lesson in orientation using the night sky. The electronic astronomy lessons of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science were also presented. As is customary for EAAE schools, surveys was distributed at the end of the school.

Solar observation during the Summer School..

Teachers gave positive evaluations for the organization and conduction of the school, the quality of lectures, the practical exercises, and observations. They expressed the desire to have such schools every year, and to include more practical exercises.

Night sky observation during the Summer School..

The Summer School was extremely useful, and motivated teachers for their work in the beginning school year.

Claus Madsen during his presentation.

Claus Madsen enphatized the idea that "the future is here today" when he talked about all the science that can be made using the ESO's VLT images. He also talked about the ALMA project and of some projects for the future namely the ELT. The general lecture was followed by the closing session were the importance of the Summer Schools in the history of EAAE was summarized.

In the afternoon, the course continued with a General Lecture called "Astronomy Heritage, an important tool for education" presented by Magda Stavinschi, of the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy, where the topic of scientific literacy and the importance of astronomy to this issue was debated.

Irma Hannula, from Finland made a short presentation about the construction of a pocket sized telescope called "Telescope in the pocket" which was followed by another short presentation called "Sunrise at different latitudes" performed by Rosa Maria Ros, from Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, as part of her cooperation work with the Finnish teacher Sakari Ekko.

Julieta Fierro, of the Instituto de Astronomía de la UNAM, México, then presented a general lecture on south american archaeoastronomy called "Astronomy in the Aztec and Maya Land".

EAAE-IAU Course 2009. Day 1

The EAAE-IAU Course on Astronomy Education, that was intitled "Adventures in Teaching Astronomy" is a pilot course organised as a joint venture between EAAE and IAU. The course has started today and will end next Monday, December 1st 2009.
The opening session was followed by a general lecture presented by George Miley, Vice-President of the IAU that explained the future plans of IAU for the decade 2010-2020, based on the achievements of IYA 2009.

EAAE-IAU Course on Astronomy Education starts today

The European Association for Astronomy Education is the first all-European network for teachers interested in Astronomy. The EAAE-Working Group Summer School (EAAE-WGSS) has organized each year a Summer School since 1997. This institution is organizing this year a specific course for teachers in order to offer them access to new educational materials and methods and the chance to exchange experiences. This course is a Comenius course (Comenius course ES-2009-217-001) open to all secondary school teachers who work in European countries.
This year's course will take place on November 26th - December 1st and will be held in the CSIC Headquarters in Madrid. At this event several different kinds of activities will be presented by astronomers and university professors and secondary school teachers members of EAAE-WGSS. The course is for school teachers interested in astronomy even if they only have limited knowledge in this field. The course is not aimed at experts. The preliminary theme of this course is "Adventure in teaching Astronomy". The aim of the organizers is to promote very active participation and the exchange of ideas.

General Lectures (GL) will be presented by IAU astronomers.

General Working groups(GWG) will focus on general discussions related to teaching astronomy in Europe.

Workshops (WS) will be held in small groups (20 participants). The objective of WS is to offer teachers very practical and didactic presentations.

Observation sessions (OS) can be held during the course depending on the weather. The goal is to introduce the participants to astronomical observations. The course will offer participants a special observation in Cosmocaixa Madrid Science Museum.

Poster session (PS) will be organised, to which participants are invited to contribute by presenting posters of particular astronomical activities. The posters will be presented during the course in English.

Evaluation Session (ES) of different activities will take place at the end of the course. There will be a chance to make comments on the course contents in a general discussion.
